Beekeeping
Ernespie Farm & Beekeeping
At Ernespie Farm, beekeeping is more than tradition—it’s a quiet craft rooted in family history and care for the land.
Brian McMicken learned the art from his mother and now tends to 16 hives with the same respect for the bees she instilled in him.
Unlike livestock, bees work independently without fuss or instruction—something Brian values. They’re nature’s tiny powerhouses, pollinating crops and wildflowers, and supporting the land’s health and biodiversity. Brian keeps a docile breed that’s easy to handle when treated well, and as he says, if beekeeping’s done right, it isn’t dangerous—just fascinating.

Sustainability
Each jar of honey and slice of fragrant honeycomb in our gift shop reflects Brian’s skill and patience. The honey is not only delicious and pure, but for many locals, it also offers natural relief from hayfever, thanks to the unique pollen gathered from the surrounding countryside.
Brian is listed on the local council’s beekeeper register, so when a swarm is reported nearby, he’s the one they call. He’s always happy to support others starting their own hives—offering advice, sharing knowledge, and promoting good practice. It’s part of his quiet mission to protect and champion the importance of bees, which he believes are vital to a healthier planet.
You can spot some hives near the outdoor play area, and during school holidays, extra hives are included in the Ernespie Farm Tour (subject to availability).

A Big Impact
At Ernespie, our beekeeping is a one-man operation with a big impact—an example of how small, thoughtful actions can help preserve the land we love for generations to come.
